I just came across an advert selling a 3yo horse that was advertised as schooling over jumps up to a 1.15 in height!! All I could think was "You lunatic!"
I have also seen an advert for a 2yo pony for sale a couple of months ago (must have just turned three now) being shown and jumped regularly up to 75cm.
Clearly people physically able to train a horse and ride a horse over jumps at this height have no idea how much damage they're doing or they just don't care.
It has always been drilled into my head as a kid that you should never jump anything under the age of 4 and even then you should only just be starting their over-fences education with trot-poles... I personally wouldn't put anything under the age of 5 over fences to ensure minimum risk to their legs and bodies - not to mention minds.
Thoughts everyone? _________________

| I totally agree, & I also think that generally horses get started under saddle too young - they might be well grown (sometimes) but mentally they're still kids until they're about 4. |

I wonder how stupid you'd have to be, to BUY a horse that had had such strenuous training so early - seems like asking for trouble, joint problems, arthritis, big vet bills etc etc.
I can totally understand getting all excited by your baby horse and wanting to see what it can do - but erk, I wish common sense was more common! |

I've seen a lot of youngsters free jumped over sizeable obstacles, for the purpose of spotting natural talent/ability. But schooled over those sort of heights?? Not good. _________________

When I sold my green broke 3yo I had a girl call me to ask if she had done much pony club and jumping. I actually got quite cranky and said no. She has only JUST been broken in and then had a spell, she has done no pony club and certainly no show jumping and then hung up on her! _________________
