New boy for Second Chance |
|
Meet Domino, the newest addition. He's been with us for a few weeks now however we didn't want to put him on the website immediately as we wanted the all clear from the Vet on his mystery lameness before we did so that the facts could be displayed.
He is a 10yo Andalusian x gelding and seems to be quite sweet although he was very anxious and afraid when he first arrived here. He has settled in however and with consistant good handling is coming around very quickly and losing his fear a little each day.
When we picked him up, we were told he'd been vetted a couple of months previously and had been diagnosed with Laminitis. The owners said he didn't suit their needs and they did not have time (so weren't going to) advertise him for a new home. We are not sure what they were going to do as they would not discuss it with us however they made it clear that one way or another he would be leaving them within the next day or two.
Cute isn't he? In his younger days he would have been grey and white pinto but his body has faded right out so you can only just made out the patches if you look really closely.
Domino saw the Vet yesterday and after Xrays and a lengthy consultation it was revealed that Domino does not have laminitis as we were told, his only issue is a sizable hole on the sole of his left forehoof which we need to keep clean and dry, and he also needs good nutrition as his hooves show much evidence of a very poor diet.

He has a large hole in the sole of his left fore and we are trying to find out what happened to cause it. He also has a brand, looks like a large oblong on its end with a little line leading off on the bottom left side. It is also quite a bit lower on his shoulder than most brands.
Does anyone know him? We have been trying to contact a past owner to see if they know what caused the hole but no luck yet. If somebody recognises this horse and knows something about his past we'd appreciate the knowledge.

He's lovely Jess, I love his face. What's his height?
Do you know approximately how old the foot wound is?

He's approx 14.3hh I would say. He's a real sweety, superb temperment... just green because he's not done much. The hole was a really bad abcess. It is approx 3 months old, we think and it will be around 6 months for it to grow out and for him to come sound with continual good care and regualar trimming. Poor chap has been so very sore - when we cleaned his feet up there was nothing but bad bruising in all four, one even began to weep as the master farrier who saw him was fixing him up poor lad.
No wonder he was so unwilling to do what his old owners wanted, he must have been in the most excruciating pain!
Here are the photos of the worst foot...
