 flies on horses! |

 HELP! its just starting to get warm here in Mt Barker, and the flies are out- in force ! I just bought them all new fly veils, however they are still bugging them, the tb mare is so annoyed she stamps her foot! I even bough some horse fly spray, but they dont like the smell, ahh no that was a waste of $30 bucks, the shetland I can spray, as she is in her 'founder' paddock, but forget the other 2! any idea's?

Perhaps try an anti fly product in a oil form that you rub on with your hands rather than spray on? One of SC's members makes an excellent product. Check the Equestrian Business section of this forum

thanks will do, only I suspect they dont like the smell? and if the stbd dosen't like it, then 'miss copycat' mare will not like it either.

Will the bigger horses tolerate sheets.If the flies are only on their legs they can still graize.

Yep my standardbred will let me put on a fly sheet, he is a easygoing fella, thats what I was looking into next, however someone told me about garlic? you give them a couple of cloves a day, been trying it but those flies are still hanging around.

The good news is that the easterly winds usually are at there very best in Nov. and do a fairly good job of escorting those pesky flies half way to Rotto[some make it!]Well that's my theory anyway.

well its always windy down here! gale force winds in summer! anyway about those flie veils? my tb mare (5yrs) dosent like them? she is an ex racehorse, finished in march, and I dont really now if racehorses when they are in between races have them on or not? do I force her to were one, or is it best to just leave her, as I dont want to stress her if she really dosent like wearing them?

I own and breed racehorses.All mine wear them at the training stables and on agistment.Then again I'm totally paranoid about eye injuries.She may of had to wear blinkers when she raced and maybe objects to it but I would put a halter on first and perhaps get someone to help you.Rub her face slowly and gently[start at her jaw]with the flyveil and be patient with her as you will need to put it on her every time she thinks is suitable to rub off. Do not do it too tight,you should be able to fit 3 fingers between the velcro and her jaw,otherwise you can get some really nasty rub marks.
