Horse Ticks |
|
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me. I have had my horse for ten years and she has never ever had a tick. yesterday I was grooming her and found three around her bottom and under her dock. I pulled them out with a bot knife but I was told their heads could cause an infection. please give me any advise or help! She is regularly wormed, i dont know what to do!

Keep an eye on the area. Its mostly likely if the heads are still in (did you see them still attached when you pulled them out?) that the area will swell and they'll form lumps.
Best advice is to call your vet and describe what the tick looked like to them and how the area is looking and they will be able to help you out.

I second calling your Vet - just in case - they'll happily give you advice over the phone.
Next time you find ticks, smear them thickly with regular vaseline - this causes the little buggers to suffocate and drop off and there's no risk of leaving the head in!

Thats great to hear!!!
The vaseline trick is a good one. Its best they back out rather then being pulled out.
Best of luck. Everytime you brush up do a full body check for anymore of those nasty buggers .

In regards to the tick problem, you might need to check up on the inside of your horses flanks and udder just to make sure. She might have just rubbed her rear on something with the ticks on but they do like things warm and hairless.Check dog if you have one.Don't know of anything better but Vaseline does work.[but of course only if the body still attached!]
