Homes URGENTLY needed! |
|
If you have ever considered offering a home for a needy horse or pony perhaps now is the time. With our busiest time of year in full swing, SC is currently full to bursting with horses needing homes and there are even more out there needing somebody to meet their needs.
Second Chance currently has the following animals up for Foster (temporary) or Adoption (permenant).
SC's Spud
This handsome, intelligent gelding requires somebody to give him a chance. He is a 5yo TB and stands at approximately 16hh and is of solid build. He requires shoes when in work as he has flat feet that bruise easily without them. He has been in sporadic work since he came to us in 2006 and has proven to be sensible, quick learning and lazy. He is very affectionate and smoochy and lives for his stomach.
Very little scares this horse and he has been on trail rides without issue, barely noticed Quad bikes and has also attended a ridden clinic at which balls were bounced under his nose, flags flapped in his face and many other de-sensitizing activities, none of which bothered him at all.
Spud requires an experienced rider as he takes advantage of nervous and inexperienced riders by digging in his toes and refusing to move or if asked to turn has been known to turn his head and still keep walking in the direction he wanted to go in. He can also be very rude and pushy on the ground with nervous and inexperienced handlers but has never been a problem to handle for somebody who knows what they're doing. He is great to lead, tie, float, shoe and handle but again - only for a confident and reasonably experienced handler.
He is green and needs schooling but has jumping/eventer potential for low to mid level and one day would be a fabulous Adult Riders/PC/allrounder mount.
SC's Romeo
This sweet old fellow is ready for a new permenant home. He needs somebody who will be gentle with him but not allow him to get away with his small stubborn habits such as nipping when he's impatient, refusing to pick his hooves up (only for some people strangely) and trying to be pushy at mealtimes. He is a 19yo TB gelding and stands at approximately 16.2hh. He is of a light build so would not be suitable to carry heavier riders.
Romeo has the energy of a horse half his age and at some point has recieved some good education. He can work very nicely and carry himself in a lovely frame with a rider who knows how to ask. Romeo has three very lovely comfortable paces and can also pop over fences willingly and with a great style. He can be nervy and spooky when ridden out on trails alone however with a buddy not much bothers him. Great in traffic, self loads and travels beautifully and would be a great confidence builder for a taller rider.
Romeo would be suitable for Adult Riders, dressage days and perhaps as a working Hunter. He is sound however a potential new home needs to consider that he requires plenty of careful work to bring him along as he's unfit and quite stiff. He is probably not up to the hooning and vigerous riding for a younger person. His heart is willing but we do not want him heavily worked due to his age.
SC's Patience
Patience is a 16yo dark bay mare approx 16hh. She is calm and sensible however requires under saddle education. She has no problem with people climbing all over her however we don't think she's ever been educated for leg aids as she doesn't seem to understand the aid to go forward at all although knows turning and halting and is willing to do either. Patience would suit somebody wanting a trail riding horse and she really wants a job to do. An intelligent, active mare that wants to work. May be suitable for harness work as she was trained as a harness racer in her youth.
Patience requires an experienced rider to get her started under saddle. In terms of a permenant home, the rider's capability will depend on how she responds to under saddle work. Patience can be a little mareish but since arriving, she has not shown any dangerous behaviours. She will also need to be introduced to new horses carefully as she can be quite aggressive toward horses she feels threatened by.
SC's Star
Star is a 7yo Standardbred mare, approx 15.2hh. She is stunningly pretty and of slender build. She is unbroken but sensible and learns quickly. Star is a nervous girl, not having recieved much handling in her lifetime and requires somebody with time and patience to bring her along and do her ground work to teach her that people are OK. Is pretty good to handle although will spook when sudden movements are made and is still getting used to having her hooves picked up and handled.
A patient and experienced person is required for this girl.
SC's Xander
Xander is a 16yo black/brown TB gelding approx 15.2hh. He is sweet natured and sensible and is excellent to handle in all respects. He has had 10 years break from saddle work (and prior to that raced) and so he requires a very gentle re-introduction to saddle work. He has 3 stunning paces and with some work would be a stellar dressage prospect for the lower levels. He is sound and just needs somebody willing to put the work in to him.
Xander has a permenant home waiting for him however their property and facilities will not be ready for 6 months. So we are looking for a 6 month temporary home for Xander for him to recieve some gentle work and to further his education.
SC's Briar Rose
Rosie is a rising 4yo mare and is approximately 11hh. She is a very spirited and intelligent little girl and will require a great deal of work with a patient and experienced person as she has had a bad experience in the past which has made her flighty with people. She has been improving very well since coming to us however will need ongoing work to bring her round. If she is ever to be a child's pony it will not be for (we estimate) several years for her to work through her fears and learn to trust people fully. She is pretty good to handle however can be difficult to catch and lead if she does not know and trust the person handling her. She is unbroken and will require much ground and prep work before she can be started under saddle.
Rosie does not kick or bite and has never offered to do either. Her main failing is bolting when she has been given a fright and trying to escape the perceived danger which can make her difficult to lead out in the open.
All of these horses (and pony) are in current temporary homes but as we have so many needy horses requiring care, their foster homes are struggling to find the additional time to put the required work into them. We are looking for new permenant/temporary homes that can provide time, care and training for these animals to give them the best possible start to a new life.
