Great idea for a learning thread!
Can I get some comments on our TB mare? We bought her as a broodmare based on her temperament and conformation. Interested to hear what people think of her conformation.
Thanks
She is standing on a downward slope in this photo

These are really hard pics to critique because for accurate critique of a horse that isn't live in front of you - you really need dead side on, dead front on, dead from behind etc, angled pics and photos of her moving or not standing square like these make it more difficult.
BUT in saying that I really like her head, its nice and fine even if its a tiny bit plain, a nice clean throatlatch area too. Her legs look pretty straight which is really good. She has plenty of lung room in front, but I dont know if its the pics or the way she's standing but she does look a tiny bit over at the knee on her near fore. But only a tiny bit.
Cant comment on the rest because the angle of the pics aren't right for other stuff _________________

I love her nice wide chest. She looks like she has lots of heart and lung room there.
It is hard to pick conformation as the photos are not easy to read but I wonder if her left forleg is not slightly bent in at the knee joint? It oculd just be the photos but I would like to have more of a look at that.
Nice wide base on her so I would think she wouldn't brush her legs much.
Love her bum but is her tail a little low set?
One sereiously nice looking mare. I know why you bought her |

Here are some side-on photos of her moving for now.

Sweet looking girl:) Hard to say accurately, but she looks a bit base narrow in front...and those first few photos look like her heels to high (farrier problem not confirmation fault) which could cause the base narrow look and the slight knuckle knee.
Also looks like she is landing toe first in the moving ones (although admittedly hard to say accurately), so I would again be looking at a correct trim before making a definite comment on her confirmation in the legs at least, especially as those moving photos don't look as if her heels are as high.
Her back looks slightly roachy in the moving shots...if she is not extending very well/has short choopy strides, maybe there is a bit of pain there?
I'm no confirmation expert so would love to hear others opinions, LOL but can you tell I am trying to learn everything I can about how hooves affect the rest of the horse;) _________________ Standardbred Horses - Anything BUT Standard!

Beautiful chest and hindquarters!
She definitely looks turned in both fronts a little, maybe try and get a photo of her dead in front and straight on standing square as it may just be the photos giving the illusion. _________________

Hmmm... not sure about her feet being a problem. She is trimmed by my OH (who is David Farmillo trained)every 4 weeks (max 6 weeks). She has beautiful balanced hooves (checked with david's hoofline) is sound and strides out very well.
I agree that she looks a bit turned in in some of those photos, will have to have a look at her straight on in front as I ahve never noticed that in real life.
She does have a very cold back (but no injuries/back problems). She takes a while to warm up but once she does she is relaxed and strides out. So it's quite possible she is a bit roached and tense in those photos as they were taken about 2 minutes into starting some work in the roundyard.
Thanks for everyone's comments so far. Conformation is one of those things that I always see once someone points it out but often don't pick up on it myself. _________________ "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated" Mahatma Gandhi. |
