hi, well we have a shetland pony also, and she has a big "boofhead" mane of hair, well usually i cut all the knots and trim it up, and then cut some of it to make it less buffy, she looks like a feral but it stops knots ect.

Perhaps a pair of thinning scissors to help make it a little more manageable? Or perhaps you'd rather just brush it and keep the whole 'Thelwell' pony look hehe.

The best help i could find on google was,
1. wash the tail with shampoo,
2. rinse out shampoo,
3.put a large amount of conditioner through the tail,
4. start on the mane by shampooing,
5. take shampoo out of mane,
6.put conditioner in the mane,
7. go back to the tail and rinse out the conditioner,
8. brush through the hair for about five minutes,
9. rinse the conditioner out of the mane,
10. brush though the mane until it is soft enough to tease your fingers through (without getting caught on knots)
11. if need be go back to the tail until it is soft enough to tease your fingers through,
also, with knots always start at the bottom and work your way up. This way it will hurt your pony less...
For the mane and tail to stay de-knotted brush through it every day, hope this helps....
